Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a Private Lesson and a Behaviour Consult?

Private Lessons are hands-on training sessions focused on teaching you and your dog new skills and strategies. Behaviour Consults are for more complex cases — they include a full behavioural history intake, a comprehensive written report, and a long-term management and training plan. If you're unsure which is right for you, email us at info@thedogschool.ca and we'll help you figure it out.

Is my dog too reactive for a group class?

Possibly, and that's okay! Private Lessons are often the right starting point for reactive dogs. Once your dog has some foundational skills and management in place, many reactive dogs go on to thrive in our group classes.

Do you offer private lessons for competition preparation or troubleshooting?
Yes. We work with handlers preparing for rally obedience, nose work, agility and other dog sports. We can address start line anxiety, focus around distractions, ring confidence, and arousal management specifically within the rules of your sport.

How many private lessons will I need?
It depends entirely on your dog and your goals. Some clients come for a single session to address one specific issue. Others work with us ongoing. We'll give you an honest assessment after your first session.

Can I combine private lessons with group classes?
Absolutely and we often recommend it. Group classes build skills alongside generalization and distractions. Private lessons let us go deep on specific challenges. The two work very well together and our credit system allows you to seamlessly switch between services.

Where are private lessons held?

All private lessons are held in-studio at 4333 W 10th Ave, Unit 1, West Point Grey, Vancouver. In select cases — specifically for extreme fear or aggression where travel is not safe or practical we offer online sessions. In-home visits are available on a case-by-case basis where we believe it's the best next step. We are not an in-home dog training service, but we will always do what's right for your dog and refer out to an in-home trainer if we feel it is necessary!

Do you train service dogs?
We are not a service dog training facility and therefore cannot train service dog tasks however many of our Key Skills and Advanced Classes are helpful for service-dogs-in-training as they help build dog neutrality and focus around distractions. Please reach out to us if you have any questions.
